AREA AND CLIMATE

The climate of north central Kansas is characterized by large daily and annual variations in temperature. Warm summer temperatures last for about 6 months every year. Spring and fall are relatively short. Winters are cold. Precipitation is heaviest from May through September. Much of it falls during the late-evening or nighttime thunderstorms.

Average temperatures for Salina are as follows: January - 28 degrees F, April – 55 degrees F, July – 80 degrees F, and October 58 degrees F. The average precipitation is 29 inches. The elevation of Salina is 1,225 feet. The prevailing wind is from the south.

ACREAGE

The property consists of approximately 640 acres with 540 acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the balance grass pastures, tree lined draws and watercourses, ponds and the building site. The property is fenced with roads on several boundaries allowing for easy patrol and access. The surrounding acreage is largely farmland and/or private hunting properties, which makes for a good environment for wildlife enhancement. Recreation opportunities such as boating and fishing exist at nearby State lakes and parks.

Hunting seasons vary and a list of seasons is available on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website www.kdwp.state.ks.us Generally, deer seasons include archery muzzleloader and rifle season and begin October 1 and end December 15. Pheasant and Bobwhite Quail seasons open in early November and run until January 31. Respective bag limits per day and possession for pheasant and quail are 4/16 and 8/32. Spring Turkey season runs 4/9 to 5/18. Fall Turkey season runs 10/1 to 12/3 and 12/16 to 12/31.

Extended upland game bird seasons for preserve hunting run from September 1 to April 1 providing seven months of hunting. The preserve hunting concept is an excellent way to enhance populations, as one of the requirements of the extended season is to release additional birds at the end of the season.
