Circling Bear Ranch

LOCATION

The ranch fronts on Siloam Rd. approximately 5-miles south of Hwy. 78. Siloam Rd. is between Hwy. 96 and Hwy. 78, both of which run west, southwest out of Pueblo.

AREA DESCRIPTION

The area in which the ranch is located is a unique blend of properties ranging in size from 35-acre parcels up to a 30,000 acre working ranch. There are both second homes and primary residences, as the area is an easy 23-mile commute to Pueblo, a vibrant town of approximately 120,000 people. There is a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) parcel of approximately 320,000 acres that can be accessed a short distance from the ranch. The San Isabel National Forest and the Wet Mountains are a short distance to the west of the ranch. The small, historic town of Beulah, accessed via Hwy. 78 West offers some basic amenities, a restaurant, convenience store and gas station.

HISTORY

The area in which the ranch is located was first discovered by Spanish explorers in the 17th century. At the time the only other inhabitants were Native Americans: Ute, Cheyenne and Apache Indians. The town of Pueblo, once known as the “saddle making capital of the world, “ about 23 miles east of the ranch, was originally known as Fort Pueblo. The adobe structures that were built, around 1842, were built with the intention of settlement and close trade to the (then) U.S. and Mexican border. Charles Goodnight, a legendary Texas cattleman and former Texas Ranger was also a pioneer cattle rancher in Colorado and New Mexico under an original Spanish Land Grant. In 1866 he laid out the Goodnight Cattle Trail from Texas to Wyoming. The Circling Bear Ranch, originally a part of the Red Creek Ranch, was part of the Land Grant. American and Mexican cowboys and Native Americans hunted on the ranch and in the general area for: elk, deer, bear, antelope and wild turkey, some of which are still abundant. Teepee circles and Native American artifacts continue to surface and include: pottery shards, arrowheads and skinning and scraping tools. During the mid 1800’s the property served as an original Pony Express and stage coach stop; and had a one-room school house just inside the main gate. Now surrounded by flower beds and granite boulders, in front of the main house, a large metal buffalo statue celebrates the general history of the ranch.

ACREAGE
